In late 1969, Tudor released reference 7021, the brand’s first Submariner to feature a date function. The model was introduced with several dial variations. Some carried incremental changes from the earlier 7928—such as the shield or rose dials, still fitted with Mercedes hands and circular markers—while another adopted a far bolder design that would later earn the nickname “Snowflake.”

After extensive collaboration with the Marine Nationale (MN), Tudor received feedback that improved dial and hand legibility underwater—particularly in low-light and murky conditions—would be beneficial. Tudor’s response was the introduction of squared hour markers and bold, blocky hands. These design elements would go on to become synonymous with the brand and were proudly revived during Tudor’s resurgence in 2012.

The present example dates to 1972 and is the blue-dial variation of the 7021. On the wrist, the watch is simply stunning. The original dial has aged to a deep navy hue, and the improved construction means it does not suffer from the bubbling seen on many earlier examples. The tritium lume on the markers and hands has aged beautifully to a rich, creamy colour. The case has clearly lived many years without seeing the polishing wheel—the lugs and crown guards remain strong, showing honest sleeve wear just as we like to see. The "Long 5" insert has faded heavily over the years, completing the "ghost" look.

The movement is running beautifully at +3 s/day, with an amplitude of 291° and a beat error of 0.1 ms. It comes fitted on a Rolex 93150 bracelet with an “AD”-stamped clasp. In our opinion, there is no good reason these should not be valued alongside Rolex 1680s from the same era. They are truly beautiful watches and continue to represent outstanding value in the vintage world.
