This early Rolex Submariner ref.16808 features a satin black dial and "nipple" markers. In 1984, this watch retailed in the UK for £6,890, whilst the steel variant cost just £770—a nine-fold difference. Today, the gap is less than fivefold, making these watches, at the time, astonishingly expensive. It also explains the very low production numbers. Over a seven-year period, Rolex produced just 5,988 examples in total, with the earlier nipple-dial variants being considerably rarer, especially in this condition.
