On 5th April 1998, a gentleman walked into Bissacco Gioielli in Castelfranco Veneto and purchased a lovely Rolex Submariner reference 16610. The shop assistant explained that Rolex had just begun using an entirely new luminous material: “Luminova", instead of tritium. Unlike tritium, which glows continuously, Luminova requires exposure to light before it can be taken to the depths of the sea.
Well, unfortunately, this watch never made it into the sea. In fact, it didn’t really manage to leave its box over the next 30 years. The watch remained completely unworn to the date of sale, now just starting its journey with its new owner.
