The GMT-Master II reference 16760, better known as the “Sophia Loren” or “Fat Lady”, arguably defined the GMT line as we know it today, introducing a sapphire crystal, improved water resistance, and, for the first time, an independently adjustable hour hand thanks to the Calibre 3085. To house this movement, Rolex could no longer use the slimmer 16750 case and instead borrowed a thicker case from their Sea-Dweller line. Its curvier profile earned it those affectionate nicknames.

It was also the first GMT-Master to feature the now-iconic black-and-red “Coke” bezel. As a Mk1, it has the “no date” dial—referring to the absence of the word Date after Oyster Perpetual
