The early to mid-1980s were a period of change for Rolex. The brand introduced new cases, dial designs, and movements across much of its line-up, effectively kick-starting what we now call the “neo-vintage” era. From this transitional period came some of the most collectible Rolex references, often produced for only a short time and featuring unique traits that have since become highly sought after.
Examples include matte-dial 16800 Submariners, Explorer II 16550s, and—what we have here—the GMT-Master II reference 16760, better known as the “Sophia Loren” or “Fat Lady.” The 16760 arguably defined the GMT line as we know it today, introducing a sapphire crystal, improved water resistance, and, for the first time, an independently adjustable hour hand thanks to the Calibre 3085. To house this movement, Rolex could no longer use the slimmer 16750 case and instead borrowed a thicker case from their Sea-Dweller line. Its curvier profile earned it those affectionate nicknames.
It was also the first GMT-Master to feature the now-iconic black-and-red “Coke” bezel. Produced for only four or five years, many surviving examples suffer from dial degradation (which can sometimes turn wonderfully tropical). The present watch, however, is a superb example of the reference. As a Mk1, it has the “no date” dial—referring to the absence of the word Date after Oyster Perpetual. The case remains very full with minimal polishing. The dial retains its glossy finish, with tritium lume on the markers that has aged to a rich creamy hue, complemented by slightly lighter-toned hands. There is a small crack at the centre post of the dial, visible under close inspection. Its original serif Coke insert, unique to this model, has retained its striking colours.
The movement has recently been serviced and is running excellently at +2 seconds per day, with 295 amplitude and a 0.2 ms beat error. The glass has been changed to a non-cyclops version, but this can be reverted to a cyclops crystal at the new owner’s request, free of charge. The original full-link bracelet is present, with the clasp replaced during a 1990 service. This 41-year-old “Fat Lady” is looking as pretty as ever.
