For many, the Rolex GMT-Master 16750 is among the last truly “vintage” models, before the drastic revamp of the lineup in the mid-1980s (which introduced thicker cases, sapphire crystals, and other changes). Released in 1980, the 16750 succeeded the 1675 and was equipped with the upgraded calibre 3075, which introduced a quick-set date function. A slightly thicker case was used to accommodate the new movement, which also offered improved water resistance. Early 16750 models featured matte dials like this one—similar to those found on the 1675—before being replaced by gloss dials in 1984.
These matte-dial 16750s truly offer the best of both worlds. The quick-set date function is extremely useful, especially when the watch is worn within a larger collection, while the overall appearance remains almost indistinguishable from the earlier 1675.
