The Rolex Explorer reference 1016 holds the title of the longest-running model in continuous production and was the first watch to feature the now-familiar “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” text on the dial. Originally launched in 1959, the 1016 remained in production—with only minor changes—until 1989, giving it a remarkable 30-year run and cementing its place as the longest single reference in Rolex history.
Like many Explorer references, the 1016 flew under the radar for years, sought after primarily by the most dedicated Rolex collectors. In recent times, however—rightfully so—these 36 mm icons have begun receiving the appreciation they have long deserved.
This example dates to final year of production, 1989 and features a Mk III dial, arguably the most balanced of the matte dial variants. I know what you are thinking, why is it a Mk III dial if its the end of production and not a Mk V? For some strange reason, Rolex re used the Mk III dial between R and end of L serial, maybe because it was used as a service dial for earlier gilt models and they had surplus? Who knows, but this is bang on for this serial. The tritium lume on the dial and hands has aged to a beautiful creamy tone, contrasting perfectly against the near flawless matte black dial. The case has retained much of its original thickness, with a full case showing minimal polishing. The original 78360 (N7 - Jul 89) stamped bracelet is one link short and has minimal stretch.
The movement came to us in great health and is running at +3 s/d, with an amplitude of 265° and a beat error of 0.2 ms. The watch comes complete with its inner box and punched guarantee papers showing the original sale with the large Swiss AD Charly Zenger, Locarno in Jan 1990.
This would have been one of the last 1016's to come off the production line, a mint example with fantastic patina to boot.
