In the world of vintage Rolex collecting, the Milgauss 1019 is perhaps one of the most elusive references. These watches rarely appear on social media, there are few dedicated collector guides for the model, and a quick search on your favourite watch platform often leaves enthusiasts disappointed—there are barely any available for sale.
However, for the select few who are in the know, it remains one of the coolest Rolexes ever made. The 1019 is a true tool watch, born out of necessity to serve engineers and scientists alike. The Milgauss solved a critical problem: resistance to magnetism. It proved so useful that the clever chaps at CERN famously adopted it.
Much like many other collectible vintage Rolex models, however, the 1019 received relatively little attention throughout its remarkable 28-year production run (almost exactly alongside the 1016, believe it or not). These watches often sat in jewellers' windows for years before finally being sold, frequently at a substantial discount. Why that was the case, we may never know—because these watches aren’t just functional; they are undeniably beautiful.
The present example dates to 1979, towards the end of production. It features the correct silver striated dial, with the larger "Rolex" signature at 12 o’clock and the smaller "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" text at 6 o’clock. The correct ridged luminous hands remain present.
The dial itself is pristine. The tritium lume on both the dial and hands has been beautifully preserved, ageing to an attractive creamy hue. The case has only been lightly polished in the past but remains full and even. The original full-link 78360 bracelet is in equally impressive condition.
The movement arrived in excellent health and is running at +2 s/d, with 294° amplitude and a 0.2 ms beat error.
Finding a good 1019 is no easy task, and this is the best example we’ve come across in quite some time. To complete the package, the watch comes with all of its original boxes, accessories, and guarantee papers.
This was (and still is) a grail watch of mine (Tommy), dating back to my years working in a scientific research lab. The added benefit of being remarkably resistant to the magnetism generated by the phones, laptops, and other electronics we live with today certainly doesn't hurt either.
