Introduced in 1963 with pointed crown guards and stunning gilt dials and hands, the reference evolved through to 1988/89, when it featured glossy dials with white gold-surrounded tritium markers.

In the early 1970s, Rolex made a notable change to the dial, shifting the primary depth rating from metres to feet, as seen on this example. This adjustment reflected the brand’s growing presence in the U.S., where imperial measurements were the norm. Rolex went on to produce many variations of the “feet-first” dial—ranging from “Serif” and “Non-Serif” to “Pre-Comex”, and eventually the “Maxi” dials (Mk1 through Mk5).

The present example, a Non-Serif dial variation, takes its name from the absence of serifs on the corners of the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock markers. The watch has been exceptionally well preserved: the tritium markers and hands remain spotless, having aged to a pleasing creamy patina. The case is strong, with full and even lugs and crown guards. Its correct Mk3 insert has developed an attractive “light ghost” fade. The watch is fitted with a 93150/580 bracelet with clasp code LT7 (2009), likely replaced during a service. The bracelet is one link short and will accommodate wrists up to 19 cm.

The movement arrived in excellent health, running at +1 second per day, with 290 amplitude and a 0.0 ms beat error. This is a superb example of an early “feet-first” 5513—an iconic Submariner, ready for its next home.
