Produced alongside its predecessor, the 1665, it elevated the Sea-Dweller line to new heights. With a significantly improved water-resistance rating of 1,220 metres—thanks to its more robust case design, enhanced helium escape valve, and sapphire crystal—it set a new standard for professional dive watches.

During the early years of production, Rolex equipped the 16660 with matte "Pallettoni" dials. By 1983/84, glossy "Bicchierini" dials were introduced and remained in use until the end of production. Even more so than other transitional Rolex models from this period, the 16660 exists with a remarkable variety of dial executions produced by several manufacturers, including Beyeler, Stern, and Lemrich, despite having the lowest production numbers of any Sea-Dweller reference.

This 1983 example features a Pallettoni dial made by Beyeler. The tritium lume on the markers and hands has aged beautifully, developing a rich, dark cream patina that contrasts wonderfully against the matte black dial, which has taken on a subtle tropical hue. As you can see, the watch has been used exactly as intended. The bezel has faded beautifully, while the tritium pearl has also developed a lovely warm tan. The case has been polished in the past but remains full and even, with no pinholes. It comes fitted to its original 93160/592 bracelet with a P11 (November 1991) clasp.

The movement has been freshly serviced and is running beautifully at +4 s/d, with 290° amplitude and a 0.2 ms beat error. We also replaced all of the gaskets, and the watch passed a 10-bar pressure test.

The Triple Six is arguably the most important neo-vintage Rolex in terms of technical advancement. Pair that with a glorious matte dial, and you have one epic combination.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/9201/0882/files/ROLEXSEA-DWELLER16660_TRIPLESIX_MATTEDIAL_18a39e86-ab4d-47b6-a371-18599110e2a8.jpg?v=1783698853
